A zero-click search is a search query where the user gets their answer directly on the search results page without clicking through to any website. The answer is provided by a featured snippet, knowledge panel, AI Overview, calculator, unit converter, or other Google-generated result.
Zero-click searches have grown significantly as Google has added more direct-answer features to its results pages. Studies from SparkToro and Datos found that more than half of Google searches in the US result in zero clicks. The share is higher on mobile and for informational queries.
For SEO strategy, zero-click growth means that ranking first does not always translate to traffic. The response is not to avoid informational content but to be selective about which informational queries you target and to optimize for citation within zero-click features rather than just the click. A brand that appears in a featured snippet or AI Overview for a relevant query builds awareness and authority even when the user does not click. That awareness influences branded searches later in the buying cycle, which is where B2B purchase decisions actually happen.
