Answer Engine Optimization

Answer engine optimization (AEO) is the practice of structuring content to appear in direct answer formats: featured snippets, People Also Ask boxes, voice search results, and AI-generated responses. The term predates GEO and originally focused on Google’s own answer features. It has since expanded to cover optimization for any system that returns direct answers rather than ranked lists of links.

The core principle of AEO is that the content most likely to be pulled as a direct answer is content that states its answer clearly, immediately, and in a format the retrieval system can extract without ambiguity. A definition that buries the answer in the third paragraph will not be pulled as a featured snippet. A definition that opens with a one-sentence answer, followed by supporting explanation, has a much higher chance of appearing.

AEO and GEO overlap significantly in their tactics but differ in their targets. AEO focuses primarily on Google’s answer features. GEO focuses on third-party LLMs and AI assistants. For B2B sites, both matter. Google AI Overviews are now appearing for a substantial share of commercial queries, and Perplexity is used heavily by technical buyers in SaaS and cybersecurity markets. Optimizing for both requires the same structural approach: direct answers first, supporting detail second.
